I know, I know, this event isn’t in Orlando, but it is an awesome event within driving distance. WaZoo is one of the premier beer festivals in the United States having made the Top 10 Beer Festivals in the Nation according to USA Today. It also benefits a great organization in the Lowry Park Zoo.

This year’s event was my first time attending and overall was a great experience. We opted for VIP access which got us in an hour ahead of the crowds as well as access to a VIP area with special food and drinks. I would recommend this option for anyone who wants to attend because it really does benefit you. Go straight for the main area and save the VIP area for later. Once the normal ticket buyers enter the food lines become long. The beer lines on the other hand remain fairly manageable. There were 25+ breweries and each one had at least 3 different brews on tap. All you food and beer are included in admission, making the price very reasonable. There were some of the big name breweries there, including ABInBev and Coors brewing, but the focus is on craft beers and even had a tent for the local Tampa Home Brewers Association. Some of the other breweries that were represented were Cigar City, Tampa Brewing, Dogfishhead, Rogue and Abita among others.

Some of the food options included World of Beer, Sonny’s, Tijuana Flats and Cigar City’s Brewpub. With the exception of rain at the end of the night everything seemed to go off without a hitch. It is a well run event with a ton of volunteers to point you in the right direction. There is live music setup throughout the zoo. The bands were pretty decent and all but one seemed to be on the “Dad” rock train.
