Smokey Bones Wings

Smokey Bones, a former bbq joint turned sports bar, is the third stop on our search for the best wings in Orlando. This is another locale that I didn’t go for the wings but they were on the menu so I decided to order them. I ordered both the smoked wings and their standard wings. When they were owned by Darden their chicken fingers, smothered in buffalo sauce, were one of my go to items. Unfortunately, under their new ownership, they changed to what tastes like a Tyson chicken tender.

Appearance:

The wings came and you could definitely tell the smoked from the regular. The smoked wings were dark where the regular wings had that familiar orange color. The wings were fairly plump and took multiple bites to finish.

Taste:

Traditional – They lightly bread their wings, which to me is a sin. Let the skin do the work because the dredge will get soggy the longer it sits. The sauce could have used a bit more heat but the flavor was good.

Smoked – After the debacle I had with smoked wings at 4 Rivers, I was prepared for the worst but was pleasantly surprised. There was no extra breading to be seen and the wings seemed to have been fried after spending some time in a smoker. he flavor was a slight bit of smoke with a good memphis style rub on them. This would be my go to wing if I were to order them again.

Crispness:

The traditional wings lacked in crispness after the breading was soaked in sauce. The smoked sings had just the right amount of bite.

Conclusion:

Would this be the first thing I ordered when I go to Smokey Bones? Probably not, but the smoked wings would make for a good appetizer (If I wasn’t such a fan of the pretzel bones).
