Florida Hospital Gourmet Soiree

I was recently invited to participate in a blogger event to help promote Florida Hospital’s Gourmet Soiree. I had heard great things about past years events but this would be my first chance to get the real experience of what it is all about. I had no idea what I was getting myself into.

We gathered in a small kitchen in the back of the Whole Foods in Dr. Phillips where they had two stations setup, At the time I figured we were in-store for a cooking demo from two of the top chefs in Orlando. Little did I know that I was the one that would be battling it out for the best dish of the night.

We were split into two teams of about 7 each and paired off with a chef. I was paired with chef Justin Leo from American Kitchen Bar and Grill in the B Resort. We immediately got started into planning our dish and we were off to the races. I was put in charge of cooking the risotto while Rashmi from The Primlani Kitchen went full force into making the chicken.

After just over 30 minutes of cooking time, we had our dish ready to serve. The judges took their plates and Rashmi and I were told that chef Justin had selected us as our team’s MVPs. That meant that we were going to have 10 minutes to create a side dish to go along with our main and go head to head with the other team’s MVPs to win a ticket to this year’s Gourmet Soiree. After a quick debate, Rashmi grabbed the eggplant and we were off to the races. I was put in charge of creating a tomato relish to top the eggplant.

We won!

So I hope to see many of my foodie readers at this year’s Gourmet Soiree on June 5. It is being hosted by chef Robert Irvine from a number of Food Network shows including Restaurant Impossible. The event is to support Florida Hospital’s Mission: Fit which is a program to help promote health and wellness among children in our local community as well as provide information to their families.

The event starts a 5:30 PM at Rosen Shingle Creek and you can find tickets and more information on the Gourmet Soiree website.
