The UCF Knights and University of Connecticut Huskies are kicking off at noon, this Saturday, in Hartford Connecticut. The Knights have yet to lose a game in the American Athletic Conference. The University of Connecticut, on the other hand, is looking for a rare win in not only the AAC, but against an FBS opponent. UConn has one win this season, against an FCS Stony Brook Team. However, UConn gave American Conference leader ECU a big scare this past week, as ECU scraped out a 10 point victory (the game was even closer than that). Another interesting factor for this game is the current weather forecast in Hartford Connecticut for Saturday at noon: 48 degrees with a 40% chance of rain. Running the football and ball security will be a must.

The Knights are currently around a two touchdown favorite. Perhaps playing their best overall game in a 34-14 victory against Temple last weekend, UCF’s defense is proving to be one of the best in college football. Meanwhile, offensively, the offensive line has been a struggle and there has been inconsistent play from quarterback Justin Holman. Fortunately for the Knights, Holman had his best game to date last week versus Temple, throwing for over 300 yards, a couple of touchdowns, and no interceptions. One could argue the offensive line also had their most consistent game, as running back William Stanback finally had a few holes to run through, as he had 94 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

UConn also prides themselves on defense. They played well against East Carolina, and appear to be improving as the season goes on. The Huskies’ offense, however, leaves something to be desired. They are ranked 124th in rushing yards and 127th in points scored, which is atrocious. The main culprit has been poor QB play. Chandler Whitmer played an inspired game against ECU though, as he also threw for over 300 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. UConn’s rushing attack was mediocre, as a team they rushed for 84 yards on 26 carries, or a very ho-hum 3.23 yards per carry.

In the end, this game will come down to which offense can find a couple of big plays on what will most likely be an unpleasant game day. Almost every game this season Holman has found junior receiver Breshad Perriman on a 25+ yard touchdown. These deep shots will be few and far between though, as the team with the better game on the ground and better ball security is the one most likely to win. UCF has more weapons to take these shots when necessary, and more play makers on offense, so UCF should win this game. They also have play makers on defense, cornerback Jacoby Glenn already has five interceptions on the year, and linebacker Terrance Plummer always appears to be in the right place at the right time. As long as UCF does not make the critical punting mistakes that they did against Temple, this should be a relatively easy and low scoring win for the Knights. Of course, don’t count out UConn’s improving defense and solid kicking game, as kicker Bobby Puyol is 7 of 9 on the year and 2/3 from the 40-49 yard range.

Players to watch:

UCF: Sophomore RB William Stanback, Junior WR Breshad Perriman, Sophomore QB Justin Holman, Sophomore CB Jacoby Glenn, Senior LB Terrance Plummer

UConn: Senior QB Chandler Whitmer, Senior WR Geremy Davis, K Bobby Puyol, Junior LB Graham Stewart
